Valencia - Real Madrid in La Liga

Valencia host Real Madrid at Mestalla tonight at 21:00 Swedish time in round 12 of LaLiga. It is a meeting of two clubs heading in opposite directions: Valencia are fighting at the wrong end of the table, Real Madrid are chasing the top. It is also, according to the Spanish press, the last league meeting between the two at Mestalla before Valencia move to their new stadium.

The teams

Valencia have taken 9 points from 11 league matches, with two wins, three draws and six defeats, which leaves them second from bottom but only a point from safety. Javier Aguirre is now in charge, and last weekend's win at Elche was his first in the league, in his fourth game. Mestalla has not been a fortress: Valencia are still waiting for their first home league win of the season. Kayne Van Oevelen, David Otorbi, Diego López and Sergi Canós are out injured, while Harvey Elliott is available again after a suspension. Aguirre is expected to go with a back five.

Real Madrid arrive under José Mourinho with 27 points from nine wins and two defeats, and they have won seven league games in a row. They are third, close behind Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, who meet on Sunday, so a win at Mestalla would put pressure on both. The schedule is the main caveat: Madrid needed an injury-time goal from Federico Valverde to win 3-2 away to AEK Athens on Wednesday, and Mourinho has rotated his squad this autumn. Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Arda Güler are expected to start.

Valencia's last win over Madrid at Mestalla was 1-0 in May 2023. Since then Madrid have won two and drawn one there. The referee is Francisco José Hernández Maeso from Extremadura, with Raúl Martín González on VAR, a choice confirmed by several Spanish outlets. Hernández Maeso has been a lenient referee by LaLiga standards. Referee databases show 22 yellow cards in his six league games this season, 3.67 per game, against a league average of around 4.5. Last season he averaged roughly 3.2 per game, according to statistics sites. Five of his six league games this season ended with five cards or fewer. The exception was a nine-yellow Málaga-Espanyol. The likely shape of the game also matters: Madrid have the ball and Valencia defend deep. That usually produces fouls, but not necessarily a flood of bookings.

Risks, odds and our bet

The obvious danger is the setting. This is a tense fixture with a relegation-threatened home side, an emotional farewell to the old stadium and a Madrid coach who, according to reports, has been publicly critical of refereeing this season. Matches like this can turn quickly, and a red card or a late scuffle can add two or three cards in minutes. Hernández Maeso is also capable of higher numbers: his 2024/25 season was considerably more card-heavy than his last two. Bookmakers count cards differently, so check the rules. Most count a yellow and a red as one card each, include only players and regular time, and treat a second yellow differently from book to book. We chose the highest line, 5.5, rather than 4.5, so that one flare-up does not decide the bet on its own.

The price of 1.40 at Bethard via OddsCapo corresponds to around 71 per cent. Combining the two teams' card numbers with the referee's figures, we expect a total of roughly four cards, which puts the chance of five or fewer at about 74-75 per cent. That is a small edge rather than a big one, but it rests on a referee whose recent numbers point the same way. That's why we're backing under 5.5 cards.
