Scotland - Slovenia in Nations League

Scotland host Slovenia at Hampden Park in Glasgow on Tuesday at 20:45 CEST, in a Nations League B Group 1 meeting that could decide second place. Both sides sit on four points behind runaway leaders Switzerland, and when they met in Ljubljana just ten days ago neither could find the net.

Sébastien Pocognoli, who replaced Steve Clarke in the summer, is still searching for a settled side. His reign opened with a 0-0 draw in Slovenia, where Scotland improved after the break but wasted their best chances, before a 3-0 home defeat by Switzerland in which Jack Hendry was sent off after only ten minutes. Saturday's 2-0 win over North Macedonia in Skopje, through Kieron Bowie and a John McGinn penalty, was a first victory for the new coach and came on the night captain Andy Robertson won his 100th cap. Scott McKenna was sent off late in that game and is suspended, while Hendry returns. Scott McTominay is still missing as he recovers from minor heart surgery and is expected back in November. Goals have been hard to come by: Scotland have scored just three times in their last six matches, a run that includes a group-stage exit at the World Cup.

Slovenia arrive with a different profile. Boštjan Cesar's side are compact and happy to defend deep, with Jan Oblak behind them, but their attack has been blunted by the absence of Benjamin Šeško, who withdrew from the squad with a recurring shin injury and misses this window entirely. Since the goalless draw with Scotland they have beaten North Macedonia 2-0 at home, with Sandi Lovrić and Aljoša Matko scoring, and lost 2-1 away to Switzerland on Saturday. That win over North Macedonia was only their second in twelve matches, which says a lot about how rarely they turn possession into goals.

History points in the same direction. The two nations have met six times since 2004, Scotland have won two and four have been drawn, and the total across those games is only ten goals. Slovenia have never scored against Scotland on Scottish soil. The pattern of the first meeting this autumn is likely to repeat: Scotland with most of the ball against a deep Slovenian defence, a lack of cutting edge without McTominay, and visitors who will be satisfied with a point that keeps them ahead in the race for second place.

The obvious risk is an early Scotland goal. Pocognoli's side put ten shots on target against North Macedonia, and if they lead, Slovenia have to come out, which could open the game up. Red cards have also been a theme for Scotland, with two in three group games, and a sending-off can change the flow of a match in either direction. We have considered backing Scotland to win, but at 1.88 the price roughly matches their chances, and their lack of goals makes it hard to see value. The draw is a possible alternative, but it is a riskier position. The goals market fits the analysis best, as we are backing the match pattern rather than a specific winner.

The best price on under 2.5 goals in the OddsCapo panel is 1.61 at Paf, and other bookmakers are offering around 1.60. That gives an implied probability of about 62 percent. Given both teams' recent scoring records, Šeško's absence, the goalless first meeting and Slovenia's lack of goals in Scotland, we rate the chance of two goals or fewer slightly higher, at around 65 percent. The margin is small but real. That's why we're backing under 2.5 goals at Hampden.
