SC Braga - Sporting CP in Primeira Liga

SC Braga host Sporting CP at the Estádio Municipal de Braga, the stadium carved into a quarry and known as the Pedreira, on Friday at 21:15 CEST in round eight of the Primeira Liga. Sporting arrive as favourites after an international break that has scattered key players across the globe, while both sides have been involved in tight, low-event league games so far this season.

Braga sit sixth with 11 points from six matches, and their season has been built on fine margins. They have scored seven and conceded only five, and all five of their latest league games were settled by one goal or less. That caution shows in the corner count. Braga's six league games have averaged 7.3 corners in total, and only two went above nine: ten in the goalless draw at Santa Clara and 14 in the 2-1 defeat at Estrela da Amadora. At home the figures are lower still, with six corners against Estoril and four against Vitória SC. According to the latest reports, centre-back Sikou Niakaté is nursing an Achilles problem and Gustaf Lagerbielke has been ill.

Sporting are third on 15 points from seven games, with 17 goals scored and eight conceded, but the last two league outings brought draws: 1-1 at Famalicão and 2-2 against Arouca. Zeno Debast was sent off against Arouca and is suspended, Georgios Vagiannidis and Nuno Santos are still recovering, and Luis Suárez, Rodrigo Zalazar and Maxi Araújo were still travelling back from South American international duty on Wednesday. Sporting's league games have averaged 7.6 corners, and only the 12 at home to Nacional went above nine. Away from Lisbon the totals have been nine at Estrela, eight at Famalicão and five at Rio Ave, as they tend to control games through possession rather than sustained wing pressure.

Recent league meetings have mostly been close, and corners have not piled up in them either. The 2-2 in Braga in March produced 11 corners, the 1-1 at Alvalade in October 2025 only six, and Sporting's 4-2 win in Braga in November 2024 just five. We expect a similar picture on Friday: Sporting with more of the ball against a Braga side that is happy to defend compactly in its own half and break when it can. That kind of game tends to produce territory without a steady stream of set pieces, and neither team has shown much appetite for crossing volume this season.

The main risk is a game that opens up. If one side falls behind early, the chasing team can pile on corners in the final half-hour, and Sporting's 12 against Nacional shows how quickly the count can rise. The samples are also small, six and seven league games, and the market clearly expects a busier match than the numbers suggest, with the main line set at 8.5. We considered the 8.5 line at a bigger price, but one extra corner would decide it, so we prefer the extra cushion of under 9.5. We like the draw in the 1X2 market as well, but the corner data gives us a stronger and more consistent case.

Under 9.5 corners is priced at around 1.63, with the over at around 2.40, which implies a probability of roughly 60 to 61 per cent for the under. Across both teams' league games this season and the three most recent meetings, 12 of 16 matches stayed at nine corners or fewer. Allowing for the small samples and regression towards the league average, we rate the under at around 68 to 70 per cent, which points to a fair price nearer 1.45. That's why we're backing under 9.5 corners at 1.63 with Paf.
