Roma - Real Madrid in Champions League

Champions League football returns to the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday at 21:00 CEST, as AS Roma host Real Madrid on matchday two of the league phase. Gian Piero Gasperini's side are back in the competition after a seven-season absence and have yet to lose this season, while José Mourinho's Real Madrid arrive as clear favourites.

Roma have built their strong start on a solid defensive base. They are unbeaten in Serie A and sit in the leading group, with recent league results including a 2-0 win at Torino, a 2-2 draw with Inter and Sunday's 0-0 at Como. Only two of their last five matches in all competitions produced more than two goals. The European campaign began with a 1-1 draw at Fenerbahçe, where Roma led at the break before conceding after half-time. The big blow is in goal: Mile Svilar has a stress fracture in his finger and is expected to be out for around a month, so Gollini is set to start. According to reports, Bryan Cristante is also expected to miss out. Donyell Malen was sent off at Como, but that ban applies only domestically, and he is likely to lead the line with Paulo Dybala and Matías Soulé behind him.

Real Madrid have been less convincing than their results suggest. Mourinho's side opened the league phase with a 2-1 home win over Inter, with goals from Kylian Mbappé and Federico Valverde, but they have also lost to Real Betis and Atlético Madrid and are six points behind leaders Barcelona in La Liga. Saturday's 1-0 win over Villarreal came through Yan Diomande's first goal for the club, but Vinícius Júnior was sent off for pulling an opponent's hair. That red card only counts domestically, so he is available on Wednesday. Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy and Raúl Asencio are out, and Éder Militão is reported to be short of full fitness.

History favours the visitors. In 12 meetings, Real Madrid have won eight and Roma three, with one draw. Roma's last win came in March 2008, and Real have won the last four competitive meetings, in 2016 and 2018, each by at least two goals without conceding. None of those four games produced more than three goals. On Wednesday, we expect Real to have more of the ball, while Roma rely on Gasperini's aggressive man-to-man pressing and quick transitions towards Malen. That kind of contest often becomes tight and physical in midfield, and with Mourinho on the bench, Real are unlikely to take unnecessary risks away from home once they have a lead.

The main risk is quality in the final third. Real have Mbappé, Vinícius, Jude Bellingham and Valverde, and their last six matches have produced 18 goals, an average of three per game. Roma also have a back-up goalkeeper between the posts, and according to reports they have lost three of their last five home matches in Europe. We considered the alternatives. A Real Madrid win is the obvious angle, but at that price it offers little against a Roma side that has not lost all season, and a handicap demands a margin we are not confident in. Under 2.5 goals is tempting, but it leaves no room for a single late goal. Under 3.5 gives us a buffer, as a 2-1 or a 3-0 still lands.

At OddsCapo, under 3.5 goals stands at 1.80 with Bethard, which implies a probability of roughly 56 per cent. The market is pricing in an open, high-scoring game, but eight of the 12 matches across the two teams' last six outings ended with three goals or fewer, as did each of the last four competitive meetings between them. We put the chance of under 3.5 goals at around 62 per cent, which gives the price clear value. That's why we're backing under 3.5 goals.
