Real Madrid - Sevilla in La Liga

Real Madrid host Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday evening in round nine of La Liga, a meeting between fourth and fifth in the table. Kick-off is at 21:00 CEST, and with Real Madrid squeezed between Champions League duty and next weekend's Clásico, there is more than three points riding on the night. We expect a tight, physical game, and the man with the whistle could play a leading role.

Real Madrid sit fourth on 18 points from eight matches. José Mourinho's side bounced back from a 1-2 defeat at Atlético Madrid with a 1-0 home win over Villarreal, and in the Champions League they came from behind to win in Rome, according to reports. That Villarreal win came at a cost: Vinícius Júnior was sent off and is now serving a four-match league ban. Éder Militão, Rodrygo and Raúl Asencio are also out, while Ferland Mendy remains a doubt. Kylian Mbappé leads the line, and the Bernabéu has been a solid base this season.

Sevilla arrive in fifth on 14 points and have been one of the surprises of the early season. They have been hard to beat on the road, with eight points from four away league games according to the available tables, but last weekend's 3-3 draw at Levante was costly. Striker Isaac Romero was shown a red card and is suspended, Giorgi Kochorashvili is a doubt with injury, and the 1-3 home defeat to Barcelona earlier this month showed how hard it is for this side to contain an elite attack. Away from home Sevilla have also collected far more bookings than at home, according to available statistics.

History favours the hosts. Real Madrid have won the last five meetings, including a 1-0 win in Seville in May, and Sevilla have a long winless run at the Bernabéu. The likely pattern is familiar: Real Madrid with the ball, Sevilla compact and willing to break up play, and plenty of duels in midfield. Mateo Busquets Ferrer has been named as referee. He has averaged four yellow cards per game in his four league matches so far this season, but last season his average was just over six per game, with six red cards in 19 La Liga matches, according to available statistics.

The main risk is that Real Madrid score early and the game loses its edge. A comfortable home lead often means fewer fouls and a quieter second half. Real Madrid themselves are not a heavily booked side, at just over two cards per game, and Busquets Ferrer's lower average so far this season is a warning sign. Even so, we prefer the cards market to the alternatives. A Real Madrid win is priced too short to offer value, and both teams to score is harder to back with Sevilla missing their suspended striker. The cards line instead rests on the game script we expect: an underdog defending deep, frustration, tactical fouls and a referee who has shown a firm hand.

OddsCapo has over 4.5 cards at 1.94 with Coolbet, which gives an implied probability of 51.5 per cent. We put the chance at around 57 per cent, based on Sevilla's disciplinary record on the road, the stakes for both sides and the referee's record across the last two seasons. The margin is not large, but we think the price slightly underestimates how fractious this game could become.
