Poland - Romania in Nations League

Poland host Romania at PGE Narodowy in Warsaw tonight, Friday 2 October, with kick-off at 20:45 CEST in League B, Group 4 of the Nations League. Neither side has won in the group so far, so this is a meeting between two teams under pressure: Poland have one point, Romania have none, and a defeat for either would seriously damage their campaign. With so much at stake, we have looked beyond the result to the disciplinary side of the game.

Poland come into the game on a run of five matches without a win. The World Cup play-off final ended in a 3–2 defeat to Sweden, the summer friendlies brought a 0–2 loss to Ukraine and a 2–2 draw with Nigeria, and the Nations League has started with a goalless home draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina followed by a 3–1 defeat in Sweden. Head coach Jan Urban has admitted that a loss tonight would bring him closer to the exit. Robert Lewandowski only came off the bench in Sweden but is expected to start, and Urban is set to return to the back four that kept a clean sheet against Bosnia. Importantly for this tip, six Poland players – Lewandowski, Piotr Zieliński, Matty Cash, Tymoteusz Puchacz, Jan Bednarek and Jakub Kiwior – are each one yellow card away from a suspension for Monday's trip to Bosnia.

Romania are bottom of the group after two defeats: a 2–1 loss away to Sweden and a damaging 4–2 home defeat by Bosnia, which means six goals conceded in two games. Gheorghe Hagi's side also missed the World Cup after a 1–0 play-off semi-final defeat to Turkey. Striker Louis Munteanu has been ruled out through injury, Dennis Man is a doubt after only partial training according to reports, and Hagi is expected to make several changes again. Ianis Hagi is back in the squad, and Radu Drăgușin, Răzvan Marin and Valentin Mihăilă remain key figures.

Romania lead the overall head-to-head record, but most of those wins belong to another era. Poland won both meetings in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers: 3–0 in Bucharest in 2016 and 3–1 in Warsaw in 2017, when Lewandowski scored a hat-trick. The match is being refereed by Switzerland's Urs Schnyder, a FIFA referee since 2018 who has never taken charge of either national team. Across his senior internationals, including friendlies, he has averaged roughly three yellow cards per game, clearly below his average in the Swiss Super League.

The biggest risk is obvious: in his only two Nations League matches, in 2024/25, Schnyder showed a combined 17 yellow cards. That is a small sample, but it cannot be ignored, and with both teams fighting for their campaign, tackles may fly late in the game. Card markets also have different rules between bookmakers – some count a red card as two cards – so check the rules with your bookmaker before you bet. We still prefer this market to the 1X2: Poland are favourites, but their form does not justify a short price, while six booked Poland players have a clear reason to stay out of trouble before Monday.

Ladbrokes offers Under 4.5 cards at 2.15, which implies a probability of around 46–47 per cent. Given the referee's international record and the suspension risk in Poland's squad, we rate the chance of four cards or fewer as somewhat higher than that. That's why we're backing Under 4.5 cards – a tip with a fair price, but not without risk.
