Lille - Galatasaray in Champions League

Two Champions League sides still waiting for their first point meet at Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Wednesday evening, when Lille host Galatasaray at 18:45 CEST. It is the first competitive meeting between the clubs, and after two league-phase defeats each, matchday three already carries real weight for both.

Davide Ancelotti's Lille have been competitive in Europe but have paid heavily for their second halves. Against Real Betis they led 2-1 at the break through Ayase Ueda and Alexsandro, only to concede twice within five minutes of the restart and lose 3-2. Ethan Mbappé was sent off in that game and is serving a three-match ban. At Arsenal it was 0-0 at half-time, with Ueda having a goal ruled out for offside, before the hosts struck three times in quick succession midway through the second half. Domestically, Lille beat Le Havre 1-0 thanks to an early Bakwa goal and drew 1-1 with Brest on Saturday, when Olivier Giroud's penalty cancelled out an early opener. Tiago Santos is out with a knee injury, while Ueda (foot) and Hamza Igamane (knee) are expected to miss out according to the latest reports. Goalkeeper Berke Özer is a doubt.

Okan Buruk's Galatasaray have made a strong start in the Süper Lig, but their European campaign has followed a striking pattern. At Sporting CP the score was 1-1 at half-time before the Portuguese side pulled away to win 3-1. At home to Barcelona they led through Aleksey Batrakov and were still level at 1-1 at the interval, before conceding three times in 15 minutes after the break. Their recent league games have also been tight before half-time: 0-0 at the break in Ankara before an 88th-minute winner against Gençlerbirliği, and 1-0 against Kasımpaşa only thanks to a goal right on 45 minutes. Rafael Leão is expected to miss the trip with a groin problem and Wilfried Singo remains doubtful, but former Lille striker Victor Osimhen is available again.

The clubs have never met in competitive football, but Lille have a solid record against Turkish opposition: unbeaten in six European matches, with two wins and four draws, most recently against Fenerbahçe in the 2024/25 Champions League qualifiers. The numbers from this season's league phase tell the clearest story. Of the 13 goals the two teams have conceded in their four Champions League games, ten came after half-time. Both sides have looked organised for 45 minutes and fragile afterwards, and with both attacks missing important players, we expect a cautious, tactical first half in which neither team can afford to fall behind early.

The main risk is an early goal. Galatasaray have scored first in both of their Champions League matches, and Lille found the net twice before the break against Betis, so one moment of quality from Osimhen or a set piece can decide the first-half market on its own. A late goal before the interval, like Galatasaray's against Kasımpaşa, would also beat us. We chose the half-time market rather than an Asian handicap because the second halves have been the volatile part of both teams' matches. Lille's home advantage is real, but with Mbappé suspended and Ueda doubtful their attack is too thin for us to back them on the handicap with confidence, whereas the opening 45 minutes are where these sides have looked most evenly matched.

OddsCapo has a draw at half-time at 2.46 with Pinnacle, which corresponds to an implied probability of 40.7 per cent. Galatasaray have been level at the break in three of their last four matches, Lille's two Champions League defeats were decided after the restart, and both coaches will be without key forwards. Our own assessment is that a level score at half-time is around 43 per cent likely, which is slightly higher than the price suggests. That's why we're backing the draw at half-time.
