Hammarby - Elfsborg in Allsvenskan

Hammarby host IF Elfsborg at 3Arena in Stockholm tonight at 19:00 CET in round 28 of Allsvenskan, with three rounds left of the season. Rydström's side sit three points behind leaders Sirius, and a win would take them top on goal difference at least until Sirius visit Kalmar on Sunday. Elfsborg arrive fifth and unbeaten in seven league games, which makes this more than a routine home banker.

The teams

Hammarby have found their rhythm at exactly the right moment. Four straight league wins – 1-0 against Halmstad, 2-0 against Mjällby, 2-0 against Sirius and 2-1 away at Malmö FF last Sunday – have pushed them right into the title race. With 56 goals scored and only 22 conceded in 27 games, they have the meanest defence and the best goal difference in the league. Henrik Rydström, who took over in June after Kalle Karlsson was sacked, has freed up the forwards: Victor Lind, Paulos Abraham and Montader Madjed have all been on the scoresheet recently. Centre-back Ibrahima Fofana is back after the suspension that kept him out at Malmö, while Amin Boudri misses the rest of the season after knee surgery.

Elfsborg are a different kind of side. Björn Hamberg's team have drawn ten times, as many as anyone in the division, and only Hammarby and Djurgården have conceded fewer than their 27 goals. Their last seven league games brought wins over Kalmar, Djurgården, Halmstad and, on Sunday, Örgryte, plus draws with Sirius, Malmö and AIK. The 2-1 against Örgryte came only via Leo Östman's stoppage-time winner, though. The bigger worry is at the back – according to the latest reports, centre-back Rasmus Wikström has a lower-leg fracture and Per Frick is a doubt with a muscle injury.

Hammarby have won the last three meetings: 2-0 in Borås in May 2025, 3-0 at home last November and 2-1 in Borås in July, Rydström's first game in charge. The match picture is fairly clear. Hammarby will have the ball and push hard, because a draw would leave the title out of their own hands. Elfsborg are compact, comfortable without possession and dangerous on transitions, which tends to keep scorelines tight. Hammarby's recent wins illustrate it: two of the four came by a single goal.

Risks, odds and our bet

The obvious risk is that Hammarby's home strength and the title pressure produce a comfortable win, as in the 3-0 a year ago. If Elfsborg's reshuffled back line struggles, or if they have to chase the game late on, gaps will appear and a second Hammarby goal can follow. That is exactly why we prefer Elfsborg on the Asian handicap +1.5 instead of backing them in the 1X2 market. The bet wins if Elfsborg win, draw or lose by one goal, so it only fails if Hammarby win by two clear goals.

At odds of 1.88, the implied probability is around 53 per cent. The market treats Hammarby as heavy favourites, which is fair given form and the title race, but we think the price on a two-goal margin is too generous against one of the league's most resilient defences. Our estimate is that Elfsborg stay within one goal around 60 per cent of the time. That's why we're backing Elfsborg +1.5 on the Asian handicap.
