Halmstads BK - Malmö FF in Allsvenskan

Bottom-placed Halmstads BK host Malmö FF at Örjans Vall on Wednesday evening, with kick-off at 19:00. It is a meeting between a side fighting to stay in Allsvenskan and a Malmö team stuck in mid-table, and the corner numbers behind both clubs make it one of the more interesting fixtures of the midweek round.

Halmstads BK - Malmö FF in Allsvenskan
Halmstad – Malmo (Allsvenskan, ons 28 okt. 19:00)

Halmstad arrive with 17 points from 25 games and a record of four wins, five draws and 16 defeats. With only 18 goals scored, the team spends long spells defending. That shows clearly in the corner statistics: Halmstad take just 4.1 corners per game, among the lowest figures in the division, but concede 7.3. Their matches have averaged 11.4 corners in total this season. There was a lift last time out, though, as Halmstad came from behind to win 2-1 away at Västerås. Even in that win the pattern held, with the hosts winning ten corners to Halmstad's one.

Malmö FF are having an unusually modest season by their own standards, with eleven wins, four draws and ten defeats for 37 points and a goal difference of 38-34. They drew 0-0 away at Elfsborg in the last round, a game in which they had more of the ball but lost the corner count 8-2. Overall, Malmö take 5.1 corners per game and concede 5.4, and their league matches have produced an average of 10.5 corners.

When the sides met at Eleda Stadion on 30 May, Malmö won 5-2. The match picture is easy to sketch: Malmö should have most of the ball and spend long periods around the Halmstad box, while the hosts sit deep and look for transitions. That is exactly the kind of game where a team that concedes as many corners as Halmstad tends to give away a steady stream of set pieces, and Halmstad's own away-from-home corner totals have been high.

There are clear risks. Halmstad's home games have been noticeably tighter in corner terms than their away games, and Malmö have taken fewer corners on the road than at home this season. If Malmö score early and slow the game down, or if Halmstad choose to keep the ball in midfield rather than sit deep, the total can stall around nine or ten. Corners are also a high-variance market where a single quiet half can decide the bet. Halmstad, with the relegation fight in mind, may also choose a more cautious approach than usual at home to Malmö, which could reduce the number of attacks and with it the number of corners. We chose the over 10.5 line rather than 9.5 because the lower line is priced almost exactly in line with our own estimate, while 10.5 still offers a small margin at close to even money. We stayed away from the 8.5 line, where the price is too short to be interesting.

At OddsCapo, over 10.5 corners is priced at 2.02 with Bet365, which implies a probability of 49.5 per cent. Blending Halmstad's and Malmö's season averages and the home and away splits, we estimate the total at around eleven corners and put the chance of 11 or more at roughly 53 per cent. That is a modest edge rather than a big one.
