Fenerbahçe - Liverpool in Champions League

Fenerbahçe host Liverpool at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul on Wednesday evening, with kick-off at 18:45 CET in the fourth round of the Champions League league phase. The storyline writes itself: Dirk Kuyt, a Liverpool favourite in his playing days, takes charge of the Turkish side against his old club only days after being named interim head coach.

Fenerbahçe arrive in poor shape. Ismail Kartal resigned last week, and Kuyt, who had been his assistant, has taken over until a permanent appointment is made. The league phase has brought two points from three games: a 1-1 draw with Roma, a 6-0 defeat at Aston Villa and a 2-2 draw with Slavia Prague after leading by two goals. Domestically they have lost two Süper Lig matches in a row by 2-1, away to Galatasaray and at home to Göztepe. Nathan Aké, Marco Asensio and Jayden Oosterwolde are all out, and according to reports Milan Škriniar is suspended. Going forward in Europe they have been modest, with only 11 corners in three matches.

Liverpool, under Andoni Iraola, have won all three league-phase games – 2-1 against Atlético Madrid, 6-3 away to LASK and 4-3 against Villarreal – scoring 12 goals in the process. The weekend brought a setback, a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal. The absentee list is long: Ryan Gravenberch has not travelled to Turkey, while Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni are also missing. Iraola has said he trusts young midfielder Trey Nyoni, who has played most of the recent games. Liverpool have earned 25 corners in their three Champions League matches, while in the Premier League they average around five per game.

As far as we can establish, the clubs have never met in official European competition, so there is no meaningful head-to-head record to lean on. The likely pattern is clearer. Iraola has stressed that his side must press hard and not give Fenerbahçe's experienced midfield time on the ball, which suggests Liverpool will have most of the possession while the hosts defend deep and look to break. That points to a lopsided corner count rather than a high one. Liverpool's opponents have rarely won set pieces in this competition – LASK took only three corners despite scoring three goals – and Fenerbahçe have averaged under four corners per game in Europe. According to data from BetOnCorners, Fenerbahçe's home matches this season have produced 8.5 corners in total on average.

The risks are real. Liverpool's European games have been wild, with 19 goals in three matches, and an open, end-to-end game can produce a rush of corners late on. Fenerbahçe's away matches have averaged more than twelve corners in total, according to the same data, which shows how quickly the number climbs when they are pinned back for long spells. A new coach and a loud home crowd could also push the hosts into a braver approach than their recent form suggests. We have stayed away from the result markets, where Liverpool are short favourites, and chose corners because the expected match picture points to one-way traffic. The 9.5 line sits close to both teams' typical totals, so this is a price-driven pick rather than a prediction of a dull game.

We are backing Under 9.5 corners at 2.10 with ATG via OddsCapo. That price implies a probability of 47.6 per cent. Our own estimate, built on Liverpool's dominance in corners, Fenerbahçe's low output in Europe and the totals in their home matches, is around 52 per cent. The edge is modest and the samples are small, so we see this as a measured position with some value rather than a strong conviction.
