The teams
David Moyes' Everton go into the round seventh with 13 points from nine matches, and their profile is clear: nine goals scored, nine conceded and very few open games. After back-to-back 0-2 defeats against Chelsea and Arsenal, they responded with a 1-0 win away to Newcastle on Monday. The squad is reported to be close to fully fit. Everton average just under five corners of their own per league game, a mid-table figure, but they have conceded more corners than they have won so far, according to the data we have reviewed.
Frank Lampard's Coventry sit 16th on nine points and have been two different teams. At home they have beaten Newcastle 4-1 and Sunderland 3-1, but away from home they have taken three points from four matches with two goals scored and seven conceded. Overall they have let in 16 goals. Coventry win only around 3.8 corners per game, one of the lowest numbers in the division, and their away figure is lower still. Aurèle Amenda is out.
History offers little here, as the last top-flight meeting dates back to the early 2000s. The match picture is more useful. Everton like to control space rather than lay siege to a penalty area, and a large share of their games have finished under 2.5 goals. Coventry, on their travels, have mostly been pinned back without generating much themselves. Coventry's league matches have averaged around 8.6 corners in total, and according to reports none of their nine games has gone over 10.5. Combining both sides' figures for corners won and conceded, we arrive at an expected total of roughly nine corners.
Risks, odds and our bet
The obvious risk is Everton's own corner profile. According to the data we have reviewed, their matches have averaged more than ten corners, and over half have passed 10.5, largely because opponents have won plenty of set pieces against them. If Everton score early and drop deep, Coventry could build pressure and rack up corners late on. A chasing Everton side against a deep Coventry block would push the count up too. That is why we prefer the 9.5 line, which sits close to the centre of our expected range, over the more aggressive 8.5 line, which pays more but needs a genuinely low-event game.
Under 9.5 corners is priced at 1.93 with Coolbet via OddsCapo, which corresponds to an implied probability of 52 per cent. Our model, which blends both teams' corners for and against with home and away splits, puts the chance of nine corners or fewer at around 56 per cent. That is a modest but real edge, supported by Coventry's low corner numbers away from home and Everton's measured style. That's why we're backing under 9.5 corners.
