Adi Hütter's return to Frankfurt has got off to a rough start. Eintracht have one win from five games – 3-1 at Mainz – sit 14th on five points and have conceded 16 goals, one of the worst defensive records in the league. Last Saturday's 6-0 defeat at RB Leipzig was already 4-0 at half-time, and captain Robin Koch was taken off at the break after a display that has drawn heavy criticism. Hütter has nevertheless backed Koch to keep the armband and start. Frankfurt are still looking for their first home win of the season after a 1-4 loss to Augsburg and a 2-2 draw with Freiburg. Going forward there is quality: Younes Ebnoutalib opened the campaign with a hat-trick at Union Berlin, and Jonathan Burkardt and Can Uzun offer support. According to reports, the squad is otherwise largely intact.
Köln, coached by René Wagner since the spring, are tenth with seven points and a goal record of 8-10. At home they have been solid – 3-2 against Hoffenheim, 1-1 against Werder Bremen and 2-1 in last weekend's derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach – but both away trips ended in defeat, 1-4 at Stuttgart and 1-2 at Hamburg. The injury list is the bigger story. Strikers Thijs Dallinga (cruciate ligament) and Ragnar Ache (muscle) are out, and Ellyes Skhiri, who returned from Frankfurt in the summer, was stretchered off with an ankle injury against Gladbach and faces a long layoff. According to reports, Timo Hübers and Rav van den Berg are also unavailable. Said El Mala, who scored the winner in the derby, is the player Hütter has singled out as the one Frankfurt must keep under control.
Recent meetings have been lively. Frankfurt won 4-3 in Köln in November 2025, and in April Wagner's first game in charge finished 2-2 in Frankfurt, with all four goals arriving in the final 25 minutes after a goalless first half. This time Frankfurt's shaky back line meets a Köln attack without its two main centre-forwards, which should limit how hard the visitors can punish it. Frankfurt, meanwhile, could drop into the relegation places with a defeat, and after conceding six we expect Hütter to prioritise stability over adventure.
The obvious risk is that the evening follows the pattern of Frankfurt's season. All five of their league games have had four or more goals, Köln have scored in every match so far, and an early goal could open everything up. So why not back the goals? Because the market already assumes them: with Over 2.5 priced as a heavy favourite and four goals treated as roughly a coin flip, the implied expected total sits well above the normal Bundesliga level. Five games is a small sample, inflated by the collapse in Leipzig, and Köln's missing strikers lower their ceiling. We prefer the total to the 1X2 market, where Frankfurt's home form and Köln's away form both argue against a clear favourite, and to both teams to score, where Köln's scoring run works against a No.
Under 3.5 goals is available at 2.03 with Coolbet at OddsCapo, an implied probability of around 49 per cent. Our own estimate is about 54 per cent: a 2-1, 1-1 or 2-0 – ordinary Bundesliga scorelines – is enough, and even a 2-2 like April's meeting lands the bet. The edge is not huge, but we think the price overreacts to a handful of extreme results, and that's why we're backing Under 3.5 goals.
