Dallas Cowboys - Tampa Bay Buccaneers in NFL

Thursday Night Football takes us to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, where the Dallas Cowboys (2-2) host a winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-4) side in Week 5, with kickoff at 02:15 Swedish time on Friday night. On paper it is a mismatch, with an undrafted rookie at quarterback for the visitors, but Tampa Bay have made a habit of keeping games close.

Dallas arrive in good spirits after a 34-30 comeback win in Houston, sealed when Dak Prescott found CeeDee Lamb for the decisive touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Lamb caught 17 passes for 189 yards that day and leads the team with 37 receptions, 498 yards and four touchdowns, while Javonte Williams ran in three scores against the Texans. The Cowboys average 30.5 points per game, joint second-most in the league. The flip side is a defence conceding 28 points per game and ranking near the bottom of the league in EPA per play allowed. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, cornerback Cobie Durant and tackle Drew Shelton are ruled out according to the latest reports. Only one of Dallas's four games has been decided by more than eight points.

Tampa Bay have lost all four games by seven points or fewer: 27-33 in Cincinnati, then 19-23 against Cleveland, 16-23 against Minnesota and 14-17 against Green Bay. In fact, ten straight Bucs games have been decided by one score. Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb against the Vikings and is out, so Jalon Daniels makes his second start. On debut he went 19 of 27 for 148 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, but also added 55 rushing yards, and Dallas have been vulnerable to mobile quarterbacks. Tampa Bay's defence ranks fifth in EPA per play allowed and is among the best against the run, although safety Antoine Winfield Jr., cornerback Benjamin Morrison and linebacker SirVocea Dennis are ruled out. Rueben Bain Jr. is set to return.

Dallas lead the all-time series 17-6 and have won the last two meetings, 31-14 in the January 2023 playoffs and 26-24 at AT&T Stadium in December 2024, though both rosters have changed a lot since. The matchup in this game is clear: a Dallas offence that scores freely against a Tampa Bay defence that has held up well, and a weak Dallas defence against a limited Bucs offence. If Tampa Bay can run the ball with Bucky Irving and Daniels' legs, they can shorten the game and limit Dallas possessions. Under Todd Bowles, the Bucs are 4-0 against the spread as road underdogs of 7.5 to 14 points.

The main risk is the Tampa Bay offence. The line has allowed a league-high 16 sacks, and if Daniels gives the ball away, Dallas could pull clear early, as their 77 per cent scoring rate on second-half drives shows. Short-week Thursday games can also turn ugly for the weaker side. We prefer the spread to the alternatives. The Dallas moneyline pays very little, and the Dallas team total is priced roughly in line with our own estimate. The handicap instead lets us back the pattern of tight Tampa Bay games, with a Dallas defence leaky enough to concede late points even if the Cowboys win.

The line has come down from around Dallas -10 to -8 and -8.5 during the week, but we still think the market rates Tampa Bay too low after four narrow defeats. We put the chance of the Bucs covering +8.5 at around 55 per cent. At 1.95 with Betinia, the implied probability is a little over 51 per cent, which gives the bet a modest edge. The half point over eight also counts, as a Dallas win by exactly eight would still pay out.
