Atlético Madrid - Manchester United in Champions League

Atlético Madrid host Manchester United at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday evening, with kick-off at 21:00 Swedish time, in matchday two of the Champions League league phase. The two sides arrive in very different moods: Diego Simeone's team are on a four-match winning run, while Michael Carrick's United have not won since their opening European night.

Atlético stumbled out of the blocks in Europe, losing 2-1 at Liverpool on matchday one, and are still without a point in the league phase. The response since then has been convincing. Four straight La Liga wins include a 4-0 home win over Osasuna, a 3-0 victory at Real Sociedad and a 2-1 win over Real Madrid in the derby, followed by a 2-1 win at Alavés on Saturday. Previews report no injuries or suspensions of note. Julián Álvarez leads the line, supported by the likes of Marcos Llorente, Giuliano Simeone and Álex Baena. The Metropolitano has long been a hard place for English clubs: Atlético have lost only two of 19 home matches against English opposition, with nine wins and eight draws.

United opened their campaign with a comfortable 4-0 win over debutants Sabah at Old Trafford, but the weeks since have been difficult. Defeats to Manchester City and Brighton were followed by 1-1 draws at Fulham and at home to Tottenham on Saturday, when ten-man Spurs equalised in stoppage time. That leaves United with six points from six Premier League games and four matches without a win. Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Patrick Dorgu, Manuel Ugarte and goalkeeper Tom Heaton are listed as unavailable, while Benjamin Šeško is a doubt with a lower-leg problem. According to reports, Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo also missed Monday's training. Bryan Mbeumo, who scored against Tottenham, and Bruno Fernandes remain the main sources of creativity.

The clubs have met four times in competitive football, and United have never beaten Atlético: two Atlético wins and two draws. The latest tie came in the last 16 of the 2021-22 Champions League, when Atlético went through 2-1 on aggregate after winning 1-0 at Old Trafford. That was a different United in a different era, so we give it limited weight. Atlético are compact without the ball and dangerous in transition, which suits a home game against a side that is struggling to create chances. Even against ten-man Tottenham, United produced just 0.77 expected goals, according to Opta's The Analyst. United do have a solid record against Spanish teams, though, with only one defeat in their last 11.

The risks are clear. United still have real quality in Fernandes, Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, and one moment can decide a tight European night. A draw is a very realistic outcome, and Atlético have already been beaten once in this competition. That is also why we chose the Asian handicap. Atlético -0.5 requires a home win by any margin. We looked at the draw-no-bet line, but its price is too short for the protection it offers. A bigger line such as -1 adds risk against a United side that has not lost by more than one goal in any of their last six matches.

At OddsCapo, Atlético Madrid -0.5 on the Asian handicap is priced at 1.97 with Pinnacle. That corresponds to an implied probability of roughly 51 per cent. Given Atlético's form, their home record against English opposition and United's absences at the back, we rate the chance of a home win at around 54 per cent. The edge is modest rather than large, but we consider the price fair to slightly generous. That's why we're backing Atlético Madrid -0.5.
