How an Asian handicap works
An Asian handicap applies a virtual advantage or disadvantage to a team before settlement. A minus line makes the selection harder to win; a plus line gives the team a head start. Depending on the line, the stake can win, lose, be refunded or be partly settled.
Unlike a three-way European handicap, an Asian handicap does not offer a separate handicap-draw selection. Whole and quarter lines can instead produce refunds or split results. Read the bookmaker’s match-duration rules.
Odds movement: why betting prices changeHalf lines and whole lines
At −0.5, the selected team must win the match. A draw or defeat loses. At +0.5, a win or draw wins the handicap bet. Half-goal lines cannot land exactly on a whole-number goal difference.
At −1.0, a two-goal win or better wins, a one-goal win refunds the stake, and a draw or defeat loses. Handicap 0 is often called draw no bet: a draw refunds the stake, while a win or loss settles normally.
Quarter lines split the stake
At −0.25, half the stake is on 0 and half on −0.5. A team win wins both halves; a draw refunds the 0 half and loses the −0.5 half; a defeat loses both. A stake of 100 therefore loses 50 on a draw, before any fees.
At +0.25, half is on 0 and half on +0.5. A draw refunds one half and wins the other. At −0.75, the halves are −0.5 and −1.0, so a one-goal victory produces a half win and a half refund. These examples assume standard football Asian handicap settlement.
Compare the same handicap, not just the odds
A price of 2.00 on −1 is not necessarily better than 1.90 on −0.5. The first needs a bigger winning margin for a full win. Compare the same team, handicap line and match-duration rules across bookmakers.
In OddsCapo’s match view, select the available handicap market and line before reading prices or movement. A line change should be analysed separately from a price change. Handicap betting still carries the risk of losing the stake.
